climate & weather San Antonio is located on the edge of the Gulf Coastal Plains and is considered to have a modified subtropical climate. Because of this, the weather is good. The summer is hot, but rarely over 100. There is a 70% chance of sunshine during the summer months. Below freezing temperatures during the winter occur on about 20 days each year. Snowfall is very rare, falling only once every three or four years. The record for snowfall was 13.2 inches on January 12, 1985. Since San Antonio is located only 140 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, tropical storms occasionally impact the city with strong winds and heavy rains. One of the fastest winds recorded, 74 mph, occurred as a tropical storm moved inland east of the city in August 1942. Some may believe that San Antonio was heavily affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita but in reality that is not the case. San Antonio, just like many other Texas communities, were a place of refuge to many of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Weather wise, San Antonio was not affected by Katrina. Hurricane Rita was a little different. Many in San Antonio prepared for what might have been a tropical storm...what we experienced instead was a week long heat wave making temperatures soar into the low 100's. The humidity varies from an
average of 80 percent in the early morning to an afternoon level of 50 percent.
